Louise Cattrell: First Light
A new series of etchings, monoprints and paintings by artist Louise Cattrell, which explore the transforming qualities of natural light within landscapes that are connected to the Rivers Tweed, Tyne and Thames.
With printmaking integral to her practice, Louise was a Berwick Gymnasium Fellow in 1998 and has since exhibited nationally and internationally including exhibitions at Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Towner Gallery, Eastbourne and PayneShurvell, London. She has undertaken residencies in Bulgaria, America, Switzerland and the Australian desert and awards include a John Minton RCA award and a British Council fellowship in Sri Lanka.
Louise will also be working with pupils from Holy Trinity School in Berwick, Berwick Academy and Fine Art students from Newcastle University during the exhibition.

Each work is as exquisitely painted as anything by JMW Turner, and seems to show a world that still looks just as must have done in his day – the unchanging rocks, seas, hills and skies of the long ago past – but there is always another dimension to Cattrell’s art. First Light is part of the International Print Biennale, the largest and most prestigious printmaking event in the UK with exhibitions and events taking place at venues across the North East, 16 September – 30 October 2016.
