Kathryn Elkin: Thick Presence All At Once – The Body in the Voiceover Booth

Henry Travers Studio  |  Saturday 2 November

Video and performance artist Kathryn Elkin presents a participatory work in progress and film screening event.

Originally from Bangor, Northern Ireland and based in Berwick for the past 9 years, Kathryn will present new work in progress informed by research into the voice-over practices used within the 1988 – 1994 Broadcasting Ban whereby the British government banned the voices of representatives of Sinn Féin and other republican and loyalist groups on television and radio in the UK.

The research extrapolates on the legacy of the ban, utilising voice-over, captioning and her experiences of the evolution of voice, accent, and the adapted rhythms and pitch of Child Directed Speech.

During the event Kathryn will discuss her creative practice and introduce this new body of research. Attendees will also be invited to make a recording that samples their voices to inform her future work.

All At Once – The Body In The Voice Over Booth has been supported by Creative Action Fund a CCZ Pilot Project for North East Combined Authority and Northumberland County Council.
