In 1870s Brittany following the Franco-Prussian war, a father gives permission for his daughter to marry a local café owner, Abel, who is keen to acquire her dowry in order to pay off his debts.

Her new husband is unaware that Rosalie hides a secret, which she initially disguises in the hope that this man will come to love her for herself. Rosalie works hard to gain the acceptance of her community, but can she convince her husband to overcome his initial response?

This film was selected to be screened in the Un Certain Regardsection of the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023, where it had its premiere.

“This delicate drama has plenty of applications to modern times – not least of all in its appeal for tolerance of others’ differences – but the film works best as a quiet study in accepting oneself…  Nadia Tereszkiewicz is terrific in Rosalie, playing the title role with charm and grace…The picture’s feminist message and understated love story will appeal to discerning arthouse connoisseurs”
Tim Grierson, Screen Daily
